Spectacular Fire In Club At Greymouth
GREYMOUTH, July 18. For the third time within a year the Greymouth Fire Brigade was called out early this morning to deal with a major fire which completely destroyed the Greymouth Workingman's Club, a former 11-roomed boardinghouse m Alexander Terrace. By the- tiine the .aiarin was given, the large building was a mass of flarnes and the brigade had to concentrate the whole of its eiforts on saving adjoining house properties, both of which were damaged. The alarm was given in a telephone call t.o the exchange at 3.3Q a.m. and within minutes the brigade, later joined by tlie Cobden Brigade and the Higli Street engine, was at the scene of the fire which was the most - spectacular seen in' Greymouth for some years. -In its elevated position on a hill, the fire was visible over the whole of Greymouth and many hundreds of residents uoon gathered. The brigade saved the adjoining properties of Messfs. J.,C. Campbell and W. T. Pound.
