Onehunga's Old Oak
iwo oi the oiflest trees m Onehunga are an oak and a karaka on opposite corners of Galway Street, Where they were planted a centqry ago by a young captain of the Royal Marines, Sir William Reece. He brought- the acorn from Devon, England, where he. picked it up in the street 'shortly before he 'left for New Zealan'd. When danger from the Maoris was past, he took up a grgnt of 480 acres of well-timbered Crown land, between Muddy Greek and Bunker's Hill, Titirangi.- -A memorial stone in front of StPeter's Ohurch, Onehunga, marks his lgst resting place, and is a re*minder that soldiers were a'mong bhe first parishioners when the pari'sh was founde'd long ago.
