. 1 War Memorial Hall , . The secretary of the.. Shannon and district War Meniorial Hali Committee has thanked theJShanr non Borough Council.for its offer of a section as a site for the erection of the memorial hall, but unfortunately the time given by the council expir.ed before the committee had reached a stage where it could obtain a decision from a public meeting regarding the site. it has been a'sked that the time be extended until after a public meeting, which will be held in about five weeks' time. This has been agreed to. * State Houses The District- Supervisor of the Department of Housing Cdnstmction has replied to.a letter from the Shannon Borough Council as to the reason for the hold up in construction of the State house units in Ballance Street, and, states that it appears to be due to the shortage of cement. The manufacturers of concrete roofing tiles, to whom the roofs were allocated, have been short of cement for several weeks. The arrangement with them for the remaining two roofs have now been cancelled and the roofs reallocated to another firm in the hope that some time may he saved; Public Library Inspection. Cr. H. L. Norris, chairman' of the library committee, reported to the Shannon Borough Council that his committee had carried out an inspection of the public library with a view to seeing what was necessary to place it on a sound footing and do justice to the subscribers. With the exception of about 25 per cent. of the present books,it was considered that the remainder could be written off as useless. The committee was astounded at the dilapidated condition of the library. The opinion was that to put the library back to at least a reasonable state, the purchase of approximately 400 books at an estimated cost of £150 would be required. The committee suggested that provision be made . in the estimates for a library grantof £135 to cover purchase of books and other library expenditure. Cr. Norris stated that in addition to the proposed purchase of books there would be the- free issue of interchangeable books from the National Library Service. The library account shows a credit balance of'£21. It has been sugg-est-ed that the £40 be spent on fiction and ,ij£35 1 jon5 "non^fiction. The establishment of the National Library Service was recommended, as no other way could be seen of providing an up to date library service. The council- discussed the matter and decided to hold it over until estimates were considered.
