Shannon Borough Council's Fortnightly Meeting

The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Oouncil was held on Tuesday night. The Mayor, Mr. D. A. Fitzgerald, presided oVer Crs. B. Clayton, V. J. Bateman, R. S. Downes, C. M. Cronquest, L. G-. Sayer, C. G. Wishart, H. L. Norris and H. Aitchison. With regard to the matter of storm water drainage a't the State 'houses, it was stated that the council had asked the chief sanitary engineer of the Housing Department to visit Shannon and it was agreed that this matter be left in abeyance in the meantime and Mr. Guinan was requested to be present at the conference with the engineer. A complaint from a resident regarding the state of the sanitary pans was referred to the health inspector. Mr. Guinan also made reference to the unsatisfactory state of the sale yards. As the license for the yards expires at the end of March, consideration will be given this matter when the license comes up for renewal. Cr. Bateman referred to a complaint he had received from a Grey "Street resi'dent, this matter being also pas'sed on to the health inspector. Correspondence from the Loans Board with regards to a propo'sed water supply loan was referred to Cr. L. G. Sayer, chairman of the works committee. Mr. T. S. Downes, on behalf of Shannon Taxis Ltd., made application for the marking off of a small section of Plimmer Terrace as a taxi stand. On the motion of the Mayor, the request was agreed to subject to the approval of the traffic inspector and the required markings and maintenance being carried out at no cost to the council. The chief engineer of the Mana- ; watu Catchment Board -forwarded a circular from the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council setting out conditions for granting of maintenance subsidies for work in drains and rivers. This matter was left in the hands o'f tlie town clerk. The town clerk, Mr. J. T. Bovis, stated that with regard to tlie preparation of a set of model bylaws for small boroughs, the Te Kuiti Borough Council have a remit before the forthcoming Municipal Conference when it is hoped that a sufficient number of jboroughs will join in the scheme for the by-laws to be prepared by the Municipal Association. Cr. B. Clayton reported that the committee concerned would carry out an inspection of the local 'cemetery with regard to doing ! further improvements. ArrangeI ments have been made to have the jwood removed from the council's section in Plimmer Terrace. Cr. Clayton stated that from enquiries he had made he was of the opinion that the £5 spent annually for keeping the water supply headworks clear of stock was well spent. Cr. L. G. Sayer reported that he had been approached by a resident tyho lived outside the borough but was connected to the water supply, complaining of the increased water supply charge made by the council. It was resolved that no action be taken in this matter. It was also reported that a water connection be installed to the property of Mr. R. Hook at Grey Street. Cr. Sayer stated that he had received a request from Mr. H. Hing, for ■an additional water supply connection to his market garden in Ballance Street. This was agreed to subject to an extraordinary annual charge and that the supply is not used between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the summer months. Reporting on the Thompson Street bridge, Cr. Sayer stated that this was closed to all traffic but the works 'committee would consider having repairs carried out. Cr. V. J. Bateman, reported on building inspections he had carried out and stated that the work' was being conducted in conformity with the permits issued. He sugque'sted that the Municipal Buildings be painted and on his motion this was agreed to subject to satisfhctory tenders being received, the required -specifications to he drawn ' up by the building committee. On the motion of Cr. H. L. Norris it was resolved to invite a representative from the free library service to visit Shannon and outline to the council the service •offered by this department. Subj.ect to an application being received it was decided to grant Shannon Motors permission to erect an additional oil cabinet on the footpath between two bowser. pumps. Complaints regarding wandering 'stock were left to Cr. Sayer to confer with the borough ranger. Accounts passed for payment on the motion of Cr.
