Labour Loses Seat In By-Election

Received Friday, 9.35 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 29. The Conservatives took their first seat from the Labour Party since the general election in 1945 today, when Charles McFarlane' v/on ihe Camlachie by-election for them. The results were: McFarlane (Conservative) 11,085; J. M. Inglis .(Labour) 10,690. Four other candidates forfeited their deposits'. They were: Miss Annie Maxton (Independent Labour) 1622; R. B. Wilkie (Independent Scottish National) 1320; Guy Aldered (Independent Socialist) 345; and R. Goodfellow (Liberal) 311. The by-election was caused by the death of the Rev. Campbell Stephen, who was an Independent Labour candidate at the general election in 1945. Mr. Siephen joined the Labour Party shortly before his death.
