NO POTATOES FOR MANY AT WEEKEND
Received Tuesday; 7 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 12. Britain's shortage of potatoes reached its peak during the week-end, when a high percentage of families throughout the country had to go without. Wholesaiers and retailers estimated tha-t supplies were 50 to 75 per cent. short of requirements, evbn under the rationing programme, and were only 17 per cent. of the quantity available at this time last year. It is reported that the ration of three pounds per head .may have to be revised because of the scarcity. . There is also a shortage of fish, due to bad weather at sea and also to the dispute hetween the trawlerovners and the National Coal Board over the 25s per ton increase in the price of coal. Cigarettes have also become scarce again. Shops that had their- shelves piled high after the Budget raised the price to 3s ia for 20, are now cleaned out. Seversil small kiosks have put up their shutters.
