Cockroft, who made it a eoiidition of his appointmdnt that his work should not be restricted by unhecessary secreey, is believed to have told the Government that he eannot stay on if visits by "outside" scientists are barred. Professor Coekroft's staff of 100 scientists backed his pfoteSt to the Minister or SUppIy, Mr.- Wilmot. Scientists are angry at the recent tightening of the security regulations. They ffiaintain that t stUdy of nuclear physics cannot be developed Without a free interdhange of work with other research workers.
