Ne&rJy 500 ships totalling over 2,000,000 tons, are now registered in Panama, whicli is a threefold inerease sinee 19110. Home American companies began a system of transferring ships to Panamanian registrv inaiiy vears ago in ofder to take advantage of lower operating costs. Kew British owners foliowed suit until recently but it is now Galmed that several British companies ari* operating ships under the Panamanian hag. The annual report of the Meroantile Marino Association, in drawing atten tion to this developniefit, eniphasise« that British seamen nuist be given the opportunity to serve 011 these British ou ned ships.
