LICENCE SUSPENDED

Motor Camp's Breach Of Regulations , The licence issued to the propfietors of the Waikanae Beach motor camp has been suspended because a number of .nersons have been granted aiinual tenancies of sites in the Caihp, on which they have erected army huts. This , was prought to the notlce of the Horowhenua County Council in a letter received at its monthly meeting on Friday from Mr. W. J. Hickling,. on behalf of the owiiers of 14 of these huts. In this letter Mr. Hickling said the huts were owned by individuals who paid an' annual ground rent to the motor camp proprietors for the right to place the huts in the camp and use the sanitar^ and water f acilities provided for campers. He now understood that the health inspector had suspended the licence issued to the camp proprietors until such time as the huts 'were removed. Mr. Hickling asked the council for an official ruling in regard to the use of the huts, addirig that the owners did not wish to be responsible for the camp proprietors losing iheir licence. The council discussed the matter in committee, deciding that it was the concern of the health inspector.

When a "Chromcle" representative subsequently referred the.subject to the health inspector (Mr. W. J. Guinan), he said the owner of che motor camp had granted a number of persons annual tenancies of sites in the camp, on which these persons, had erected army huts. This definitely contravehed the Camping Regulations under the Health Act, which stated that sites could only be let for temporary accommodation, While in addition to that the huts themselves did not comply with the building bylaws. Accordinglv,- at the expiration on December 31 last of the owners' licence to carry on the camp, he had withheld a renewal until such time as the camp was made to comply with the regulations. Mr. Guinan added that there was nothing in the regulations to prevent owners of camps having permanent buildings on the grounds, provided they were only let for temporary and not nermanent accommodation.
