ROMNEY RAM SALE
High Priced Sheep Go to Melbourae *"T~ Opening on a buoyant note the 19th annual sale of stud Eomney rams at Feilding yesterday witnessed a sustained tone for all high quaiity sheep and the highest price of 7l0gns, equalled that of the 1945 sale and holds second; place to , the reeord price of lOOOgns. paid in the 1944 sale. The order of tlie selling provided priority for tliose three vendors who obtained the highest average for the 1946 sale and thereafter the sequenee of . offerings depended on a ballot. Tliis "arrangement accounted for a break in the tone after the first half hoUr's brisk selling when the interest dropped as* fams which did not. measure np to buyers' ideas came through the selling ring. As prominent breeders' stock came forward the tone brightened up again to reach the high figure of 710gns. for a ram oft'ered' by Messrs. A. Brown and Sons of the "Bankhead" stud, Kiwitea, the purchaser being Mr, Yelland of Milbourne who was recently in New Zealand visiting the various sheep studs. A South Island breeder participated in the bidding for this ram which excited niuch interest and Messrs Dalgety and Co., is agents, made the purcliase. In the same run the next highest price of 610 gns. was obtained by the same vendors, the pvrchaser being Mr. A. Murray of douthland. The overall quality of the olfering of over 200 stud Romneys was very good, the consensus of opinion being tliat 011 this occasion there was a generally more even type of sheep olfering, particularly of the dense woolled type. Feilding district breeders were undoubteuly popular a'mong buyers and their offerings with odd exceptions, were readily competed for. Tlie selling oiiened on Messrs A. P. South ey and Sons' sheep, the first realising lGOgns. and tlie next 200gns. ' The Feilding breeder, Mr. J. H. Rutherford, w'hose offerings figured early in the sale, realised 425gns. each for two particularly choice rams and these remained the highest prices until Mr. II. B." Johnston 's rams were offered when a sale al 480gns. came close to equalling his top price of 520gns. for the 194G sale. There were breaks in the tone periodicaily but late in the afternoon the buying strengthened agam as the. large attendance actively participated in the biddihg. Qverseas visitors present included Mr. Cosmo H. Gibson df Bueons Aires and Al rs. Gibson, Messrs A. J. Tanner. of Sydney, Robinson, of ' ' Kamo ' ' Station, New South Wales, Palmer, of New South Wales, and J. Daly, Government wool inspector of New South Wales.
