PENICILLIN MANUFACTURE

UNIT FOR 'PALMERSTON NORTH Equipment for the lirst penicillin manufaeturing unit to be installed in New Zealand has been designed and | should be compteted in the near future, I according to a statement made yesterj dav by Dr. J. Melville, direetor of the ; Plant Rosearch Laboratory of the Dei partmerit of Scientilic and Industrial i'Kesearch. The decision of the Goveru- | xuent to provide for sucli a unit, foHowed a recommendation made by Dr. Melville on his return to Nejv- Zealand 1 towards the eud of lafit year f rom a I visit to the United States where he j made an intensive stu'dy of recent developments in penicillin researeli. The unit will comprise two sections, 1 one of wliich will be located in Auck- | land and the other at the Grasslands [Division of the Department of Scientilic i and Industrial Researeli in Palmerston j North. The Auckland section will bc | cliiefly concerned with the microbio- | logical aspect of the work, while the I fermentation equipment will be instal1 led at Palmerston 'North where the exj traction of penicillin will take plaee. The penicillin extracted in this re- ! search will be devoted solely to planr and'animal biology.
